For most of my life, I genuinely believed one thing:
I hated candles. Not mildly. Not occasionally. I avoided them completely — the strong artificial scents, overpowering perfumes, chemical heaviness in the air. They gave me headaches, allergies, irritation, and a clear sense that anything involving candles was simply not for me. Ironically, that was long before I discovered what natural candles, clean fragrances, and hand-poured craftsmanship actually feel like. And that discovery changed everything.
The Turning Point: Realizing Natural Candles Are Different
For years I assumed that all candles were the same.
Most commercial ones are made from paraffin and heavily scented with synthetic fragrance oils — no wonder I reacted so badly. Everything changed the day I encountered a candle made from natural wax.

No chemical punch. No synthetic cloud.
Just a calm, warm, subtle aroma. For the first time in my life, my body didn’t protest. That moment sparked a question that would later start my whole crafting journey: What if candles could be gentle, safe, and enjoyable — even for people like me?

Discovering Beeswax and Soy Wax

The next turning point was understanding the difference between:
- paraffin candles
- natural beeswax candles
- soy wax candles
I had no idea how huge the contrast was.
Beeswax
Warm. Naturally sweet. Clean-burning. It felt ancient and comforting — like something that actually belonged in a home.
Soy Wax
When I discovered soy wax, another door opened. Unlike paraffin, soy wax is:
- clean
- soft
- vegan
- eco-friendly
- ideal for people with fragrance sensitivities
It melts beautifully and holds gentle, balanced aromas, making it perfect for those who want scented candles without the chemical fog.
Certified Natural Fragrances: A Game Changer
For the first time, I learned about certified IFRA-safe fragrance oils — the kind formulated specifically to be:
- skin-safe
- allergen-conscious
- non-irritating
- designed for natural candles
These fragrances didn’t overwhelm my senses. They didn’t cause headaches. They added scent the way scent should be: calm, clean, natural. And suddenly candles were no longer “the enemy.” They were something gentle. Something enjoyable.
When Candle Making Led Me Into Skincare
One day, while pouring soy wax, a bit of warm wax spilled onto my hand. I braced for irritation.
Instead… it felt nourishing.
Soft. Almost moisturizing.
That tiny accident planted a new idea: If soy wax feels this gentle on skin… could it work in skincare?
That thought eventually grew into the foundation of my natural balms and body-care products — but that story deserves its own post.
Why I Continue Making Handmade Candles Today
My goal isn’t just to make candles.
It’s to make candles that people with sensitivities can trust. Candles that are:
- natural
- clean-burning
- made from soy wax or beeswax
- scented with safe, certified natural fragrances
- gentle even for sensitive noses
- crafted with intention, by hand
- relaxing instead of overwhelming
I once believed I hated candles.
Now I know I simply hated bad candles — the mass-produced, synthetic kind. Today, I create the candles I wish I had found years ago.
Candles that feel safe, warm, grounding, and comfortable. And this journey from rejection to passion still continues.
